Alex Yip was born in Birmingham and is the City Councillor for Sutton Wylde Green, serving as Shadow Cabinet Member for Social Justice, Community Safety, and Equalities. A magistrate, school governor, and trustee of Sutton Coldfield YMCA, he was first elected in 2015 after running a successful chain of takeaways, teaching English in Shanghai, and volunteering across Africa.
A proud one-nation Conservative, he has served in several cabinet roles, including Shadow Cabinet Member for Vulnerable Children and Communities, with a focus on domestic abuse, SEND provision, and community safety. He has also been a Parliamentary Candidate for Birmingham Edgbaston.
With a Master’s in International Relations, his volunteering experiences abroad shaped his commitment to civic duty, social justice, and tackling inequality. British-born Chinese, he is also a strong advocate for mental health awareness, supporting charities such as Mind and Papyrus.
When asked about early experiences of racism, Alex says:
“When I was at primary school, my sister and I were bullied relentlessly. Two things stuck with me: the look in those children’s eyes when they were being racist, and the hurtful things they did to children like us.”
