Raj Pal is a curator/historian and political activist. With an extensive career having worked in the cultural sector in various capacities, he is now a freelance curator/consultant and has worked on projects at the National Trust and other heritage institutions. He co-curated the Blacklash: No Justice, No Peace exhibition at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery in 2022, based in the life and activism of Mukhtar Dar as a founder of the Asian Youth Movements (AYM) in the 1980s.
Using his knowledge and skills to focus on bringing about cultural change through curation, Raj is working with a number of cultural institutions on how best to reflect diversity through their outputs. A particular driver of Raj’s work is his commitment to developing a new and inclusive sense of what it means to be British in a diverse, multi-cultural society in a country with a long history of colonialism and empire.
When asked about what makes a city anti-racist, Raj Pal says:
“My children, my family, we are very multicultural and multiracial. So, an anti-racist city, to me, is one where that diversity is seen as natural, as normal.”
